On September 23-24, 2017, the Texas Armed Forces and Military Veterans Open will be held at the Community Room of the North Richland Hills Library, 9015 Grand Avenue, North Richland Hills, Texas 67180. It is open to all active duty and retired U.S. military veterans and not just confined to Texas only. Free entry fee, but U.S. Chess Federation membership is required. For Texas military members, Texas Chess Association membership is required.
The Texas Armed Forces Chess Championship (TXAFCC) is open to anyone with a government issued military ID and on Active Duty stationed in Texas or Active Duty stationed outside Texas with a Home of Record in Texas. It is also open to Reservists, Texas Guard, Military Academy Cadets, College ROTC Cadets, and Military Retireees. The Texas Military Veterans Open Chess Championship (TXMVOCC) is open to all other Honorably Discharged Veterans. Just show your VA ID card or a copy of your DD 214 to the tournament director. It will be a 4 round Swisss System format. The time control is game in 60 minutes with 5 second delay on the chess clock. The event will be USCF-rated, so you are required to record your moves. The chief tournament director is Chris Wood. The event is being organized by Jim Hollingsworth, Major, U.S. Army (retired). Send advance registration to Jim Hollingsworth at armychess@aol.com and include your USCF ID number. Early registration can be done on Friday, September 22, 2017, at the Chess Hospitality Suite, Holiday Inn Express, 820 Thousand Oaks Drive, Hurst, TX 76054. Phone is 817-427-1818. On Site registration is Saturday, September 23, 2017, from 8 AM to 10 AM. There will be an opening ceremonies and VIP remarks on Saturday, September 23, from 10 AM to 10:25 AM. Round One is on Saturday, September 23, at 10:30 AM. Round Two is on Saturday, September 23, at 2 PM. Round Three is on Sunday, September 24, at 10 AM. Round Four is on Sunday, September 24, at 1:30 PM. The Awards Ceremony will be on Sunday, September 24, from 4:30 PM to 5 PM. Engraved Wall Plaques will be for following: In the TXAFCC section Champion (10x13) Best Retiree (9x12) Best Unrated (9x12) - Note: this is for players with no rating or pre-event ratings based on less than 26 games In the TXMVOCC section Champion (10x13) Best Unrated (9x12) - Note: this is for players with no rating or pre-event ratings based on less than 26 games There will also be plaques for: Best Army Best Marine Best Sea Services (Navy, Coast Guard) Best USAF Best Student (Academy or college) Legacy Champion - Note: Legacy players, chess-playing veterans who are not Texans, but have made significant contributions to Texas Military Chess as a player, director, organizer, and/or other criteria decided by the Chief Organizer, are eligable for this tournament. Special certificates will also be awarded (TBD). This tournament is funded through generous donations to the Texas Chess Association (TCA), a 501(c)(3) organization.
