Chess Clubs

In 1550, there may have been an organized chess club in Italy.

In 1610, a chess club was formed in Naples, Italy.
In 1686, chess players gathered at the Café de Procope in Paris. Café de Procope was the oldest coffee house in Paris. The chess room closed in 1740.
In 1733, chess was being played at Slaughter’s (Old Slaughter’s) Coffee House, St. Martin’s Lane, in London. Slaughter’s was founded in 1692. The Slaughter’s building was demolished in 1844.
In 1740, chess players moved to the Café de la Regence in Paris. The café first opened in 1681. The chess room closed in 1916.
There was a chess club in Dublin, Ireland from 1749 to 1750.
In 1770, chess players started gathering at the Salopian coffee house and tavern at Charing Cross. The coffee house ended in 1804.
In 1774, the first properly organized chess club in England was founded, under the influence of Philidor. (source: British Chess Magazine, October, 1907) The St. James Street Chess Club was formed and held at the Parsloe’s Coffee-House on St. James Street, London. The club was limited to 100 members and membership was three guineas. When Philidor was in London, he played chess at Parsloe’s House. In 1825, Parsloe’s chess club disbanded.
In 1783, a chess club was organized in Paris near the Palais-Royal by le Comte de Provence (later Louis XVIII). Membership was 100 francs.
In 1789, there was a chess club in Edinburgh, Scotland, but were less active in chess and more active in cards.
In 1803, the Berlin Old Chess Club was formed. Military personnel were prohibited from being members of the chess club. It folded in 1847.
In 1803, the New York Chess Club was formed. It disbanded in 1804 and re-formed in 1821 with its president being J. T. Watson.
On April 6, 1807, the London CC was founded at Tom’s Coffee House in Cornwall. Augustus Hankey was its first President. It folded around 1825 (other sources say 1851) and was replaced by the City of London Chess Club in 1852.
In 1809, the Schachgesellschaft Zurich Chess Club was formed in Zurich, Switzerland. It is the world’s oldest chess club that is still in existence.
In 1810, the Brasen Nose Chess Club was formed by an Oxford surgeon, William Tuckwell. It lasted until 1813.
In 1812, a chess club was founded in Duesseldorf, Germany by Karl Tannenschneider.
On Nov 29, 1812, the Hereford CC in England formed.
In 1813, an informal chess club was founded in Dublin. It lasted until 1819. It was re-formed in 1867.

In 1813, the Athenaeum Chess Club was formed in Philadelphia. It was soon disbanded and re-formed in 1847.
In September 3, 1817, the Manchester CC was re-formed. It lasted until 1876.
In 1818, the Fort William CC was formed in Fort William, Scotland.
In July, 1819, the Dublin Philidorian Chess Society was formed at the Harp Coffee House in Dublin, Ireland.
In 1820 (some sources say 1828), a tobacconist named Gliddon, opened a room in the rear of his shop, King Street, Covent Garden for chess. He supplied it with chess books and periodicals, chess sets, and chess boards and called it Gliddon's Divan.
In 1820, there was a Leeds Chess Club.
In 1821, the New York Chess Club was re-formed, with weekly meetings. The club met at Morse’s Coffee House on 31 Park St in Manhattan. The club president was J. T. Watson. In 1845, the club president was Charles Stanley.
On September 19, 1822, the Amsterdam Chess Club, or Vereenigd Amsterdamsch Schaakgenoostschap (VAS), was founded.
In 1822, the Edinburgh CC was formed. It is the oldest chess club in the UK. There was an Edinburgh CC long before 1822, but the present club claims no succession.
In 1822, the Winterthur CC in Switzerland was formed.
In 1823, the Paris Chess Club (Le Cercle de Philidor) was founded. In 1824, the Paris Club challenged the London Chess Club. However, the Paris Club was in the process of disbanding because of disputes among its members. (source: London Times, Feb 19, 1824). Another Paris CC lasted until 1839.
In 1823, the Rotterdam Chess Club was founded.
In 1823, a West-end chess club formed at the Percy Coffee-House on Rathbone Place in London. It was founded by George Walker. It closed in 1825.
In 1825, Lewis’s Subscription Room on St. Martin's Street in Lane was founded by William Lewis. It ended in 1827.

In 1826, a chess club was formed at the Queen’s Arms tavern, in St. Paul’s Churchyard, London.
In 1827, the Philadelphia CC was formed after a visit by Maelzel and the Turk automaton. It had over 100 members the first week. It lasted until 1830.
In 1828, Bernhard and Samuel Bernhard Ries, opened the Grand Cigar Divan at 101 Strand in London. His chess salon was in the room known as Simpson’s Restaurant. It lasted until 1904 when Simpson’s was bought out by the Savoy Hotel group of companies.
In 1828, the Hyderabad CC was formed in India.
In 1828, the Madras CC was formed in India.
In 1829, there was a chess club in Breslau.
In 1829, the Bristol Chess Club was founded by Elijah Williams. The original club disbanded in 1871. The club was later reformed under the name ‘The Bristol & Clifton Chess Association.’
On October 16, 1829, the Nottingham Chess Club was founded at Bromley House in Nottingham, England. It lasted until 1845.
On May 8, 1830, the Hamburg Chess Club (Hamburger Schachklub) was founded.
In 1831, a chess club was founded by George Walker at Huttmann’s Coffee Shop on Bedford St, Covent Grove.
In 1832, the Trinity Chess Club at Cambridge was founded.
In 1833, a chess club was founded by a few amateurs in Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London. It dissolved in 1840.
In 1833, the Berlin Chess Club (Berliner Schachgesellschaft) was founded.
In 1833, The Dublin Chess Club was formed. It ended in 1867.

In 1836, the Bromley House Chess Club was founded. It disbanded in 1845.
In 1836, the Circle des Panoramas CC in Paris was formed.

In March, 1836, J. H. Huttmann reorganized the Westminster Chess Club, ending club dinners and concentrating in chess.

In 1837, the Cercle des Echecs was formed at No. 1, Rue de Menars, in Paris. Labourdonnais was its professional chess player.

In 1838, the New Orleans CC was formed. The Secretary of the Club was Ernest Morphy. They met in a room formerly occupied by the District Court, Merchants’ Exchange.
In 1839, a chess club existed at the Athenaeum in Manchester.
In 1839, the Budapest Chess Club (Pesti Sakk-kor) was founded by Jozsef Szen (1805-1857).
In 1839, the New York CC was formed by James Thompson and Col D. Mead.
In 1839, the Washington CC was formed in Washington, DC.
In 1840, the Australian Chess Club was formed. It lasted until 1844.
In 1840, Huttman's Garrick Chess Divan at No. 4 Little Russell Street, Covent Garden, was founded.
In 1840, the Glasgow CC was formed in Glasgow, Scotland.
In May, 1840, the Halifax Chess Club in West Yorkshire, England, was founded by F.W. Cronhelm. It dissolved in 1847 and re-formed in 1852.
In 1840, the Inverness CC was formed in Inverness, Scotland.
In 1840, the Norfolk CC was formed in Norfolk, VA.
In 1841, a chess club was formed in New Orleans.

On Dec 1, 1842, the Brighton CC was founded by Hugh Kennedy.

In 1844, the St. George's Chess Club moved to the Royal Polytechnic Institute. It remained there until 1854.
In 1845, the new Athenaeum CC was formed in Philadelphia. Its President was William McElroy. The club later became the Franklin Chess Club.
On October 27, 1845, the Boston CC was formed with 20 members. It lasted until 1849. It was reorganized in 1857 and incorporated in 1888. It met at the corner of Tremont and Montgomery.
In 1845, the Kidderminster CC was formed.
In 1845, the Louisville CC was formed in Louisville, KY. The club met at Washington Hall.
In 1845, an informal chess club was formed at Oxford University.

In 1845, Purssell's restaurant in Cornhill, London founded a chess club. The place closed down in 1891.
