In 1820, Alexandre Deschapelles (1780-1847) taught chess to Louis-Charles Mahe de La Bourdonnais (1795-1840), his student.

Around 1820, the Dublin pattern was introduced in chess sets. They were made of ebony and boxwood with fine carved knights. The pattern was marketed by Jaques.

In 1820, Marcus Kann was born in Vienna. He co-published analysis of the Caro-Kann in 1886. He died in 1886.

In 1820, The Incomparable Game of Chess was published in London by J.S. Bingham. It was a translation from the Italian of Ercole Del Rio.

In 1820, Chess: A selection of 50 games from the automaton was written by W. J. Hunneman.

In 1820, Giuseppe Ciccolini wrote Tentativio di un nuovo giuoco di scacchi.

In July 1820, the Liverpool Kaleidoscope started a chess column.

On December 8, 1820, Thomas Frere was born in New York City. He was one of the foremost promoters of chess in the USA in the 19th century. He helped organize the First American Chess Congress in 1857. He died in 1900, at the age of 79.
